Conservation
with HVAC Requirements - 2010 / 2011
ParaFX.com operates our own
datacentre. We do not co-locate our systems in other datacentres.
The main reason for this is to provide us an environment where we can
control resources and implementations.
Because of this we are also
able to engineer our own operations in such a way so as to cater to our
customers needs and also to implement unique efforts for a greener
operation.
As you know, operating a
room of equipment requires temperature control. Many datacentres
employ air conditioning, or chilling units to maintain operation
temperatures. This HVAC equipment runs winter and summer,
consuming utilities such as water, gas and electricity.
In our efforts for a more
environmentally conscious operation, we have developed in house our own
HVAC / ventilation system that allows us to take advantage of the cold
winter months to cool our systems rooms. We employ a custom
built series of ventilation systems that, in a precision controlled
method, bring in outside cool air during the cooler months to control
the temperature of the datacentre facility. This allows us to
reduce our electrical consumption significantly while still maintaining
a high level of quality of service.
As such a system doesn't
exist and isn't practical for the major datacentres, this series of HVAC
systems were developed and constructed in house with some injection by
specialists. This HVAC system has been tested and will be
implemented live in 2011 as part of the operation.
Increasing Facility Efficiency - 2011
There has been a mass
campaign for homeowners to increase the efficiency of their home by
increasing insulation, upgrading windows etc. Most businesses do
not take the initiative to do this as well, and as such most businesses
are the biggest wasters of utilities.
Our operation has spent the
past 2 years taking extreme initiatives much like many home owners have.
We have constructed our datacentre and implemented significant
insulation, window upgrades, ventilation upgrades etc to increase the
efficiency. Our periodic tests from this has resulted in an
approximate 43% decrease in consumption of utilities. This
required a significant investment for implementation, however this will
not only allow us to operate with lower costs going forward, but most
importantly - it allows us to decrease our environmental impact.
Conclusion
It is important to note
that all efforts implemented are done so as to not to sacrifice the
level of service we offer to our customers. We strive to
constantly improve our operations to benefit the environment, our
customers and the sustainability of our business. We will
continue to review our operations in all aspects to seek further
improvements and will implement them as much as possible.
